Where to Start Your Search for PMP® Exam Prep Classes

There are lots of options when selecting an exam prep class. Here, we offer only samples of in-person classroom training available in the most populous states in the U.S. and selected other locations. This listing should give you a feel for the range of options available when comparing classes you may be interested in. Entries are intended to indicate recent past or new future offerings in order to begin your research to find your provider.

Understand that this is only a very brief list of available options. Descriptions are generally derived from the provider’s website, and no claim of relative quality is indicated in any case. Prices, courseware and other details may change in the future. Also, while courses often share many similarities, we are here attempting to point out the differences according to the provider’s websites.

Most listed classes are provided by PMI Registered Education Providers (REPs). Be sure to confirm their status before committing yourself to anything. No claim is made of presenting a complete list of qualifications for each listed class. Most classes offer a copy of the PMBOK® Guide as a text, whether listed in all cases or not. PMI members can download a free rights-protected copy.

Note that not all classes are “guaranteed to run,” and markings related to that may not be provided in every case. Money-back guarantees vary in description and should be considered carefully.

When available, classes provided by local Project Management Institute chapters are usually a great option and value. You can find a listing of local chapters here.

These classes generally provide what PMI calls “contact hours,” or hours counting toward the exam’s professional education requirements. Generally, each classroom hour counts as a contact hour. Because these are exam-preparation courses, individuals already possessing the PMP® credential would generally not claim them as Professional Development Units (PDUs) toward credential renewal. At universities, school enrollment is not required.

In listing the classes, we’ll begin with classes from local organizations. Later in this article, we’ll look at classes offered locally in multiple states by national or international providers. In general, courses offered by universities do not count for college credit but could count as Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Units (PDUs for PMP® credential holders only).

Providers often claim pass rates for their students in an attempt to provide a very useful measure of effectiveness. The method of calculation is often explained and should be considered carefully. This number is normally based on student-reported information which can be inconsistently reported to the provider.

All prices are shown in U.S. dollars.

Questions to Ask Any Provider

  1. Is the course I’m interested in still scheduled? If so, is it guaranteed to run? If it is guaranteed to run but doesn’t, and I’m signed up, how do you make it right? How far in advance of class do you provide notice of class cancellation?
  2. Tell me about the instructors. May I see their resumes?
  3. How long has the course material been in use?
  4. What should I do before class?
  5. What are the pass/fail guarantees, specifically?
  6. Do you make a distinction between learning questions and exam simulation questions?
  7. How realistic is your exam simulator?
  8. Are you a PMI Registered Education Provider?
