Compared to its neighboring state of West Virginia, Virginia’s job market does a pretty good job of hiring and paying project management professionals. Statewide, every field makes above the national average, and computer and information systems managers earn a median salary of over $137,000, or 114% of the U.S. average salary. What is interesting, then, is that the major cities do not report such high salaries, nor high numbers of hires in the various fields. This indicates that suburban centers are a better draw for project managers, and that PMPs earn more in these locations. If you stick to cities, consider working in industrial production management in the Richmond or Blacksburg regions, or as an architectural and engineering manager in Winchester.
